My work is intended to capture moments within a situation to allow the viewer to take the time to contemplate the nuances that can so often pass us by. The situations begin with an autobiographical moment: an encounter with paint, a scene watched in a film, or the day to day movements through my house. An installation is created of the space that is to be occupied. A performance by a model (mostly women) within that space is then photographed and then the photographs are painted. The paintings and photographs are placed within the installation or carefully constructed to create a new space for the viewer to observe the works, create their own narratives, and bear witness to the moment that has occurred. The work is strongly influenced by biographies, cinematography, film stills, and pop culture. I intend the work to make the viewer aware of their place as voyeur, as well as the orchestration of the situation by me the artist. I hope the work has a strong sense of sensuality and melancholy which is balanced by the powerful color, composition and sense of confrontation that the paintings and photographs have. The scenes become more about what you don’t know than what you do know from the information given. The viewer fills in the gaps, while recognizing the undercurrents.
