Sub White is Ulrika I K Andersson debut solo show. Compiling of twelve paintings and three photographs the exhibition celebrates individual observations over true reality. Her work utilises visually striking elements which have been considered, examined and then recreated. The end result is an illustration of what she herself perceives as the realization of her visual interaction with the original. Her work is the acting out of a thought, as opposed to the perception of things as they really are. The striped sweater is the thread which binds the Sub White series, both a visually striking and characteristically contemporary component which in ten years will instantly evoke 2007. The sweater is photographed around Malmö, her studio, her home, and a hotel room in Stockholm, Autobiographical moments, encounters with paint, or snippets from media are the starting point for the pieces. Mostly worn by other models as a vision of Andersson, but never as a direct representation. The images are then meticulously painted, removing the photograph from its immediate context and transforming the visual into a physical experience. Many of the finished paintings are then recycled as elements of new installations which see the cycle begin once more. The series display a new found liberation not previously present in Andersson’s work. The artist’s private contemplation is captured as she includes images of both herself and past works within the paintings. The clear, direct imagery is a response to both the artist’s frustration with vague gestures, and the often exaggerated excess used to make a point. It is an attempt to capture moments within a situation, to allow the viewer to take the time to contemplate the nuances that can so often pass us by, without lobbying for a prescribed experience.
